If you just finished that frantic Season 2 finale, you’re probably staring at your TV wondering how the hell Netflix expects us to wait for more. The tension is high. The stakes are global. And honestly, the cliffhanger they left us with was borderline cruel.
The good news? You can breathe. Is there a season 3 of the diplomat? Yes. Not only is it real, but it’s actually already out in the world, having premiered on October 16, 2025.
What Happened with Season 3’s Release?
Netflix didn't mess around with this one. Unlike some shows that vanish for three years between seasons, the turnaround for Season 3 was remarkably fast. They actually renewed the show for its third installment before Season 2 even hit our screens. That kind of confidence from a streamer is rare these days, but when you have Keri Russell and Allison Janney facing off, the math stays pretty simple for the executives.
The third season returned to the eight-episode format we saw in the first year. This was a bit of a relief for fans who felt Season 2’s six-episode run was just a tad too short to really dig into the meat of the conspiracy.
The Cast: Familiar Faces and New Blood
Keri Russell is back as Kate Wyler, obviously. She’s still the messy, brilliant, suit-hating heart of the show. Rufus Sewell also returned as Hal, despite every character in the show—and most of the audience—constantly wondering if he’s a genius or just a massive liability.
But the real spice in Season 3 comes from the expanded roles of the heavy hitters:
- Allison Janney as President Grace Penn. Her promotion from Vice President (following the "unexpected" death of President Rayburn) changed the entire molecular structure of the show.
- Bradley Whitford joined the fun as Todd Penn, the First Gentleman. Watching Janney and Whitford back together on a political drama is basically catnip for West Wing fans.
- Aidan Turner joined as Callum Ellis. His character, a British spy, adds a layer of romantic and professional complication for Kate that we didn't necessarily see coming but definitely needed.
Why Season 3 Flipped the Script
Showrunner Debora Cahn described Season 3 as "flipping the chessboard." In the first two seasons, Kate was largely trying to prevent a war while figuring out who blew up a British ship. By the time we hit the third season, the enemy isn't just a shadowy figure in the distance—the enemy is sitting in the Oval Office.
Grace Penn being the President is Kate’s "particular nightmare," as Cahn put it. Kate spent the better part of the previous season trying to prove Grace was behind the conspiracy, only for Grace to end up as the leader of the free world. It’s a classic "keep your enemies closer" situation. Kate basically has to work for the person she’s trying to take down.
The setting shifted, too. While London is still a major hub, Season 3 spent a lot more time in Washington D.C. and New York. The show finally leaned into the domestic political machine, showing how the Wylers handle the pressure when they aren't just guests in a foreign embassy but players on their own home turf.
Is There More After Season 3?
If you’ve already binged your way through the third season, you’re likely looking for the next hit. The story doesn’t end here. Netflix has already officially confirmed Season 4.
In fact, production for the fourth season kicked off almost immediately after Season 3 dropped. Filming is currently scheduled to run through July 2026, with shoots happening in both NYC and the UK. If they keep up this pace, we’re likely looking at a late 2026 release date for the next chapter.
How to Catch Up
If you’re late to the party or just need a refresher on how we got here, all three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
Pro-tip: Watch the Season 2 finale again before jumping into Season 3. The transition of power happens fast, and if you don't remember exactly how Hal "inadvertently" contributed to President Rayburn’s demise, the first few episodes of the new season might feel a bit like a fever dream.
